How to Disable Comments and Replys on WordPress

ARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

If you were like me about 1 hour ago, then that’s pretty much what you were thinking, right? NOTHING is more frustrating than using a program, clicking a button that says “DISABLE COMMENTS” and then returning to your blog to see that the ability to leave comments is still there! I mean, what the hell are these guys thinking? If you disable comments…then comments should be disabled! I’m speaking of course about WordPress and, although I love the program to death, there are some things about it that just make me scratch my head. Let’s face it, most of us are not programmers and when someone says “um – duh…just change the CSS code and PHP it to the server using…..” (right about here my head starts to implode and I jam a fork in my eye).

Well, I found out a way…and I am now going to show you how to do it…..and I’m NOT going to tell you in a way that makes you go “Huh? What the hell is he talking about??? DAMMIT I STILL DON’T UNDERSTAND – TO HELL WITH BLOGGING!!!” No, no – I’m going to tell you in a way that makes you say “Damn…that was pretty easy..how come nobody else teaches like this.” I’m doing this to obviously get traffic to this blog, in the hopes you will buy something through one of my links…but even if you don’t, this is one of those posts that just made me very satisfied to write…and I am glad to help out the WordPress community somehow because WordPress has done so much for me!

This method worked for me and I am pretty sure it will work for you. However, make sure you remember where these codes I am going to have you remove were located so you can replace them should they NOT work. (I know I’m starting to sound like those other friggin advice sites that didn’t even help you but how else can you write this crap!??) Just bear with me.

STEP ONE

OPEN A BEER

This should help somehow – even if you don’t drink beer – the crisp sound of hearing a can of beer being opened is somehow satisfying.

STEP TWO

LOG INTO YOUR WORDPRESS WP-ADMIN

I am assuming of course that you know how to at least do this! We all know what the control panel looks like – but I’m going to put up pictures of it anyway so you know EXACTLY where to click and what to do. To illustrate this, I am going to use one of my WordPress sites, which is Buy Gold Online. If it works, it would be like – totally cool if you could just go there and become a fan on Facebook or something..I mean, would it kill ya? It took me two hours to make this friggin post! haha

STEP THREE

CLICK ON SETTINGS THEN ON DISCUSSION

STEP 4

- MAKE SURE “ALLOW PEOPLE TO POST COMMENTS ON NEW ARTICLES” is NOT checkmarked. MAKE SURE “ENABLE THREADED (NESTED) COMMENTS” is NOT checkmarked. MAKE SURE BOTH BOXES NEXT TO “BEFORE A COMMENT APPEARS” ARE checkmarked. I know most of you have already done this step but just in case!

STEP FIVE

Click on APPEARANCE then EDITOR

Now on the right side after you click EDITOR you will see a bunch of PHP files starting with 404 Template, then Archives and so on.

The first one you want to click on is Page Template. This is the PHP programming that makes your Pages in WordPress. You are going to just click on it…and the programming language used to create it will appear in your editor where you can edit your code.

Next click CTRL F and enter THIS CODE INTO THE SEARCH TEXT BOX

<?php comments_template(); ?>

Now do a search for it in the editor. It should be near the bottom. You can also just search for it manually…but that takes a bit longer and its easy to mistake it for something else. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FOUND EXACTLY THIS CODE! Also, its a good idea to completely copy the entire comments.php text and save in a word document or notepad file in case you erase the wrong thing. Then you can just cut and paste the original back in and you will be back where you started..

After you have found that code, just delete it and click UPDATE FILE!

IMPORTANT! You are only removing THIS and leaving the rest!

Now do the same exact thing for the Single Post file called single.php – it should be just a few down from the Pate Template file you just edited…

When you are done, just click update file again..and that SHOULD take care of the problem! This will remove the ability to leave comments and replys..

Good luck!
